I'm sure this question was long on your mind ... I am attempting to answer it with this decidedly non-R&R instrument.

Thanks for watching, and please see my other videos.

Send me a note if you'd like to be on my email list and get advance notices of the rare Mandolin Maniac performances.

The mandolin is made of zebra wood, and was made by Terry (will add his last name soon) of Herb David's Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor, MI.

More of my music can be heard at www.mandolinmaniac.com and www.myspace.com/themandolinmaniac.
Thanks for all the hits!

Can a Mandolin Rock?
by Timothy F. Prosser, May? 2008
12 bar blues, moderate shuffle, 6/8 beat

I used to play the guitar, electric, screamin' loud
I played that blues and rock and jazz and made my momma proud
Then one day somethin' happened, that turned me right around
My mom's old mandolin, I grabbed it and pulled it down
I jammed on Louie Louie and I rocked on Who Do You Love
I played it at a party and everybody said laws above

(chorus)
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock, rock, rock, rock?
Rock you from your bottom to your top?

Guitar players are dime a dozen, a jam will bring a crowd
I'd like to play my guitar but they all play too darn loud
I started playin' my mandolin and jammed all over town
The more I played my mandolin, the less I set it down
I played those rock'n'roll standards, set those cats all on their ears
Cause nobody plays the mandolin like I do with no fears

(chorus)
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock?
I ask you people
Can a mandolin rock?
Can a mandolin rock, rock, rock, rock?
Rock you from your bottom to your top?

Now I've got my own website, at mandolinmaniac
I'm recording lots of music, and enjoyin' every track
And pretty soon you'll see me, with my own myspace page
I don't care if the mandolin, will ever be the rage
You see I'm gonna make this little thing rock for you
I'm gonna play it all night, till the skies are turnin' blue

(chorus)
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
I tell you people
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks!
This mandolin rocks, rocks, rocks, rocks
Rocks you from your bottom to your top
This mandolin rocks, rocks, rocks, rocks
Rocks you right out of your socks
This mandolin rocks, rocks, rocks, rocks
Rocks you from your bottom to your top
Yea-a-a-a-a-a-h!

  • can you recommend a mandolin brand for beginners?

  • @italouruguayricano There are many brands and product lines within those brands, so I can't recommend one in particular. Your best bet is to try mandolins in your price range, and if possible take along a friend who plays who can give a second opinion. Or if you know a good instrument maker see if they can evaluate your purchase before you commit to buying it. Good luck!

  • @italouruguayricano That's tough to do. The big name instruments are more expensive than I would recommend to those starting out, but you might come upon a locally made or used instrument, as I did, for perhaps $200-500 that would be quite playable and a lot of fun. My first mandolin only cost $180 but kept me playing for several years, and I didn't worry terribly about taking it to parties and jam sessions. My second cost $500. As you can hear it has turned out to be a great instrument.

  • Thanks for the compliments, everybody - It was my first time making a video of anything, and I did it on an ocean beach so I apologize for the wind. Thanks for making this my most popular song. I LIVE for the hits!

  • can a mandolin rock? yes, yes it can... even with a hippie playin it

  • i wanted to get a mandolin to add more variety to me and my friends rock band, but i wasnt sure if a mandolin could rock...

2 hours after watching this video i bought one! lol

  • ROCK

  • I use my mandolin in an English folk dance group, in a church music group, and playing at Irish style pub sessions. Its also very good for playing Carolan style melodies.

A cheap plywood based instrument is good value for a beginner but it is really worth paying more for an instrument. with at least solid top (I prefer cedar, spruce is brighter)

Paul Hathway is best bang for buck, see his site

  • Subscribed!

well said, an average mandolin player and an average guitarist will always sound MUCH better than 2 average guitarists 'cause the high voice of the mando sings over the lower and middle voice of the guitar. and its so easy to get started with! you only need 5 chords and the scales of G, A, D and C to play or jam on 80% of popular songs

Guitar will always be the most versatile instrument, but the mandolin is the most underrated instrument.

PS my mandolins is by Paul Hathway

  • damn this is bad assssssssss

  • Your mandolin surely rock!!

The best of all the mandolin rock tunes.
