Wish there were still programmes like The Old Grey Whistle Test. Mainstream music television backing new musicians.

That show was revolutionary in the UK. Most of our biggest bands debuted on that show.

John Peel kept it going, but now theres nothing

@cjmooney9 You are one seriously well cool person, yep hats of to you as you DO KNOW your punk history. Many english people do not realise that punk was in New York prior to the UK and yes it was the lead singer of Televison that got Mclaren's attention. McLaren (as yer know) wanted to manage the New York Dolls (though he never actually did - they used him to get some new stage clothes) and they were the first band to wear head to toe Westwood in patent leather & PVC red.

Punk in the UK existed as a fashion before it was actually a musical genre. The music started in New York a few years before. By bands like Television and The Ramones.

McLaren was a big fan of Television in particular. And really liked the clothes they were wearing, so brought it over to the UK via his designer wife putting a UK twist on underground New York Fashion.

Rotten didnt work at sex (Vivienne Westwoods boutique). He was just a regular there.

Apparently McClaren spotted him wearing a I hate Pink Floyd T Shirt that he had made, and thought of him as the embodiment of UK punk.

the sex pistols loved, and still love to provoke people... that's all, they're no fashists how you can imagine.
