1937, Spain is in the midst of the brutal Spanish Civil War. A "Happy" circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited by a militia. Still in his costume, he is handed a machete and led into battle against National soldiers, where he single handedly massacres an entire platoon. This absurd and disturbing scenario raises the curtain on a twisted tale of love, revenge, and psychopathic clowns that could only spring from the mind of filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia.

Fast forward to 1973, the tail end of the Franco regime. Javier, the son of the clown, dreams of following in his father's career footsteps, but has seen too much tragedy in his life - he's simply not funny and is only equipped to play the role of the Sad Clown. He finds work in a circus where he befriends an outlandish cast of characters, but as the Sad Clown he must take the abuse of the brutish Happy Clown Sergio, who humiliates Javier daily in the name of entertainment.

It is here that he meets Natalia, a gorgeous acrobat, and abused wife of Sergio. Javier falls deeply in love with Natalia and tries to rescue her from her cruel and violent husband, unleashing Sergio's jealousy. But Natalia is torn between her affection towards Javier, and her lust for Sergio.

With neither man willing to back down, this twisted love triangle evolves into a ferocious battle between Sad Clown and Happy Clown, escalating to unbelievable heights in this absurd, shocking, irreverent and unforgettable film.

And this, ladies and gentlemen,is why foreign films will always be superior to American bullshit.

A film that starts out very interesting. Gradually getting stranger, more disturbing and ultimately ridiculous.

Having said that, though, foreign films are still good, and world culture should be celebrated, diversity is the spice of life, as the old saying goes. a lot of liberal americans put themselves down a lot, thinking thier culture is dumber then europeans or whatever, but thats not true, your media is just so focused on what goes on in your own country, that sometimes, yall can lack awareness of what goes on elsewhere. anyway, thats what i wanted to say, rant over.

In fact, I think america actually punches above its weight culturally, after all the one country has given birth to so many genres of music and film and whatnot, possibly something to do with all the peoples and cultures being in the one place, and that mix of influences, and being a relatively new country and all. in fact, american culture seems to influence pop culture in other countries much more so then the other way around, it speaks to a lot of people because it comes from that mix.

I have nothing against foreign films, but saying that they are inherently better then american ones is pretentious. Wheres does this idea of "All american movies are cliched montages of explosions , all foreign films are artistic and creative" come from? Im not even american btw, Im Irish, I just see this same type of thinking on other videos for trailers of foreign films.

A horiffic and very funny metaphor for the Spanish Civil War of 1936 until Blanco was assassinated and the Leftists took over. Like the struggle between our 2 main characters; pretending to know what's best for something, when neither option is clearly the best option, will ruin everything for everyone.

Loooove this crazy movie!! On an historical note, the scene in which the car exploded and landed onto the roof of the building is not an exaggeration -- this is a true depiction of how Luis Carrero Blanco was assassinated in Madrid in 1973 after he became prime minister. He was in a Dodge 3700...

This has got to be one of the most anti-politically correct in-bad-taste movies I have ever seen...and it was very, very awesome.
