A daytrip in July 2009 to "The Basin" at the head of the Pemigewasset River in Franconia Notch, NH, with my parents and son Schuyler, who took a dip with me in the ice-cold stream, with water temps easily in the low 60s. One word: Shrinkage!

  • Just the surrounding area. Technically, no swimming is allowed in the actual "Basin," which is unfortunate - because it sure looks enticing.

  • When I was in my teens you could still swim in the basin it had a round current back in the late 60's you could just get in and float in a cold circle all day while you turned blue. .

  • i think theyre sunfish or maybe smallmouth bass or something. further into the woods in the river, i was trying to walk across the rocks and i slipped and got dragged by the current maybe 10 - 12ft. down river in 4 ft. of water. unfortunately when i got out, i had this cool little fish tank in the screen of my cell phone. ohh well, but i have to say....IT WAS A BLAST AND ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE ;) im going back up there in 2 weeks from now. great to see you guys are enjoying franconia.

  • this is my all favorite place to go for the weekend. theres a trail that follows the river and comes out to a crossing and thats my paradise :) then i take the tram to the top of cannon mountain and sit down on a trail on the side of the mountain that overlooks the highway and go to sleep. last time i was there, there were gliders flying in and around the mountains on the other side. and yes, the cooold river is very refreshing. you can see to the bottom of the deep part. and theres fish.

  • 1:37. i've seen people swim there

  • Did you folks actually swim in "The Basin" itself? -- or just the surrounding area?

Only once have I ever seen anyone swimming the actual basin.
