The discussion was thorough and perhaps esoteric to some, but it was great discussion by a masterful panel of artists. This was only a small portion of the wonder that was Weekend with the Masters 2010. Enjoy. (Please forgive my poor hand-held camera work.)
Description:
On the first official night of the Weekend With the Masters event, Richard Schmid lead a panel discussion on the importance and tradition of painting from life. This discussion covered the artists of the past who pioneered this practice and also examined the effects of an over-reliance on photography today. Included in this discussion was the broader topic of technology as a whole, whether our past and present modern inventions are a hindrance or help to the traditional artist, as well as other thought-provoking questions.

Note: The few missing portions are due to camera malfunction, audio quality too poor to include, or my tired camera-holding arm. This represents about 98% of the discussion.
I had the opportunity to see these master's at work last year but I missed it. I do regret it.

so by using recognizable realistic images, such as figures, landscapes, etc. and then our interpretation of how those are portrayed...i.e. what the figures are doing, the lighting on the mountains, the flowers in the vase, we can effectively communicate our message to the viewer, without having to write a paragraph to describe it! A realist painter is someone who communicates a feeling, emotion, or a place, with masterfully painted imagery instead of words.

wow....I am so thrilled, at 58 years old, to finally be able to hear the words describing what true fine art is, and what the public has been "sold" for the last 50+ years that isn't fine art! I have finally been able to start painting in the last few years, and I agree so much with the panel, and Scott and Daniel in particular as I too, have found that my larger, more complex paintings require some photo reference, especially when interpreting a new concept out of an old sepia reference photo.
