'Music legend' Sharan Rani was the first Indian female instrumentalist of international repute. Breaking through the centuries old glass ceiling, Sharan Rani became the very first woman to take up 'Sarod', an instrument so difficult that it was termed as a 'man's instrument.' Soon her name became synonymous with the Sarod and she became popularly known as 'Sarod Rani' (Queen of Sarod). This documentary, no doubt well made, has a great flaw. It is about a woman disciple of the great Allaudhin, and many referred to the other (male) disciples with whom she trained, but this documentary made no effort to get the GREAT Annupurna mentioned, also another woman disciple of Allaudin. And even get Sharan Rani to speak about her a bit. After all, she MUST have known Annapurna with whom she lived in the same house. Annapurna is a greater musician than even Sharad Rani!

Wow, I didn't know much about her before this video. Her moving to Maihar to live and learn, such dedication, especially for a women. thanks for the video.

"Music is the ultimate worship": Her daughter put it just right, and the mom embodied that wisdom to the core of her being. In my college hostel back in the 1950s and 60s, I would often eagerly wait for her recitals on AIR. A wonderful tribute to a legend. Thanks for the post.

I met Sharan Ravi in 1976. I am a Sarode player and I walked to her house in Delhi. She answered the door, inviting me inside. After playing a little Sarode for her she very graciously critiqued my playing, called it "haphazard". She was correct of course, but I had just hitch hiked from Europe so my playing was a reflection of my state of mind. I've always loved her music. K.Wells. BC Canada. Sarode player.
