Mario Lanza (1921-1959)

"Roses of Picardy"(Wood-Weatherley). Recorded January 25, 1952 for The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Ray Sinatra.

Haydn Wood's World War I era evergreen, "Roses of Picardy", has been recorded time and time again. Lanza's sensitive rendition takes a backseat to no one. Few classically-trained singers have been able to move successfully between opera and popular song, but Lanza does so effortlessly. His phrasing is utterly natural, instinctive, and unforced, yet full of nuance. And his obvious enthusiasm and sincerity convince the listener of the rightness of almost every musical gesture. Combined with that incredible voice, these elements make Lanza's legacy of popular song an enduring, ever-inviting musical treasure.

  • Could someone please tell me if this song can be bought on a CD ?.I would very much like to have it. Perhaps khankonchak can help me?

    regboorman

  • Yes, please check your mail.

  • Sorry, but this recording is not "RARE 1952",

    first presentation: "THE MAGIC MARIO"-LM1943.

    Well thank you at all!!!

But there is still a question:

Does anybody know anything about the CD "WHERE IT ALL BEGAN" - GEMS101650??????

Or maybe if somebody have got this CD please say it to me.

Diese Aufnahme ist nicht "RARE 1952". Erstveröffentlichung: "THE MAGIC MARIO"-LM1943

    Sowieso DANKE!!!

Suche CD "WHERE IT ALL BEGAN" - GEMS101650.

  • I never claimed that the recording has not appeared before on CD. "RARE 1952" is not part of the song or album title, but merely refers to the fact that this particular recording is hard to find. I'm afraid you have misunderstood.

  • I agree. The great Mario Lanza. The sensetivity he displays in this rendition is peerless.

  • The best tenor voice I have ever heard. He is even now the benchmark against which other tenors are judged. Pavoratti knew this. So do Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.

  • This Mario Lanza, the biggest influence in my life. I thought I had all in my collection, 78's 45's LP's cd's but thanks to youtube I see there are reality recordings and videos of my favourite tenor. Thanks to all. After 50 years I had the chance to visit the mario Lanza museum in Sth Philly..wow

  • Very beautiful, the words so clear.

  • Awesome! A unique talent. TY K for sharing.

  • My late Mother was a soloist (soprano) at many weddings and funerals when I was a little girl way back in the 50's. She often sang this for weddings, and just in times in general. She adored Mario Lanza and how I wish she were still here to hear this on the wonderful internet!

  • I agree with the tought that this is the greatest tennor of all time. I was raised with him and Caruse. Each tenor is great in his own way. But I do not believe that there will ever be any that can match the passion Mari Lanza had in his voice.

  • I've been listening to a number of Lanza recordings lately. This one is clearly one of

the very best of his RECORDINGS. Why, it's hard to say. Maybe his enunciation?

  • Fabulous tenor. Beautiful romantic lyrics, of undying love.

  • forget pavarotti and all the other tenors including the UK's best ever tenor themuch loved harry secombe. Lanza was by far the best ever lived

  • my heart sing and smile. thnks, uploader

  • multumesc pentru ca ai impartasit cu noi acesta bijuterie . din ROMANIA, MII DE MULTUMIRI
