Uta Brandes studied English language and literature, political sciences, sociology and psychology at the University of Hannover. She graduated with the Magister Artium (M.A.) in sociology and psychology in 1973. In 1983 she did her doctorate (Dr. Phil.).

This professorship at KISD (Köln International School of Design) consists of two subject areas that can (but dont have to) be linked to each other:

Gender and Design deals with analyses of products/objects as well as with the relationship between subject and object with regard to gender. Every Design student and professional be it consciously or subconsciously designs as a socially and culturally gendered human being. On the other hand, the use of design in everyday life implies gendered behaviour, and incorporates gendered desires and projections. These phenomena, often veiled or denied, are systematically revealed and their implication of and impact on design are subject to theoretical and empirical research, in order to make them an integral and obvious part of every design research and practice.

Qualitative Design Research looks into empirical and theoretical studies on the use and understanding of objects, productasignage, services, texts and relational networks. It implies transdisciplinary and transcultural studies/surveys on behaviour, desires as well as on the acceptance and transformation of design.

Apart from teaching both scopes of work are also subject to research at the newly established Zentrum für Gebrauchs- und Markenforschung/ZfGM (Research Center of Use and Branding), jointly headed by Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes, Prof. Dr. Michael Erlhoff, Prof. Paolo Tumminelli.
