Ground Attack on an unexpanded Commodore VIC 20 vintage home computer. Retro gaming.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's simply a quick demonstration of the game so that anyone not familiar with these old games can see what it looks like.
It's also here so that I can embed it, along with most of the games in my collection, on my website (see link above).

Any opinions or comments I make regarding these games should largely be taken with a pinch of salt.
They are usually based on my first impressions after a very brief play.

  • If that is indeed written in basic, that's mindblowingly impressive for 3.5k. Also, it does appear to at least have some decent graphics and sound.. It actually looks rather fun, I probably would have bought it, back in 'the day'.

  • I believe it's a combination of basic and machine code.

As a clone of Scramble, it's very poor, but considering the limitations of the hardware it's running on, as a game in its own right, it's not too bad.

Better than many ZX81 games, but not as good as many on the 2600, which was a technically inferior machine.

  • The trouble in a lot of these VIC games seems to be that the character's jump in steps - lurch as you so rightly say - rather than scroll properly. I don't recall many of my VIC games, I'll have to dig a couple out and see.

  • A game of that calibre could have been done in Basic without any machine code. I will admit that the animation of the characters is a little tighter than I'm used to seeing from a pure Basic program, but nothing ever happens which would have required something beyond the Vic 20's Basic. I've been rescuing some of my old programs recently (from badly degenerated audio cassettes which corrupted the data) so I have some fresh familiarity with the ol' Vic.
