With a name like "Mellotron Archives," it doesn't sound like Markus Resch's company does anything very exciting. But names can be deceiving: for the past couple of years, Markus has been building true analog Mellotrons based on the original designs, and has even developed a Digital Mellotron that sounds about as authentic as any non-tape sampler can. We check out the Digital incarnation at Winter NAMM 2010.
The Digital Mellotron -- currently in prototype -- will feature over 100 sounds, two-channel operation, and dual LCD matrix screens for navigating menus and sound banks. To affirm the authenticity of its samples, Markus played the keyboard for us, and A/B'd it with the sounds from an actual analog Mellotron (a.k.a. his tape backup system).
