THE VENTURES -"The Mercenary" (1968)

The Pop legacy of Ennio Morricone!:

Pop culture is porous. The clanging sound of surf instrumentals influenced Morricone in his scores for the 'spaghetti' westerns. This went full circle when bands like The Ventures would cover him. Here they are clanging a great turn on the theme to "IL MERCENARIO" ("THE MERCENARY", 1968).

For "KILL BILL" fans there are a couple connections here. Note how they use a flute at the beginning to emulate the famous whistling of Alessandro Alessandroni. Zamfir did the same thing later with the pan pipes in his Morricone homage, "The Lonely Sheperd", which Tarantino and RZA picked up on by choosing it for "KILL BILL 1". Also, the original theme of "IL MERCENARIO" as well as its "L'Arena" are crucial music used in "KILL BILL 2".
