I very much liked Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one, don't get me started on the other two), and here's why: If a movie or book has a basis in a world or time place that is feasible, I can definitely accept some supernatural components. But when a movie like Lord of the Rings takes place in a world that at its core is absolute fantasy (not to mention LOTR had some serious logic flaws) then I take issue with it.
I may enjoy it, but I will will always hold something realistic higher.
So you'd prefer Orlando Bloom in [The Kingdom of Heaven] over Orlando Bloom in any installment of [Lord of the Rings] or [Pirates of the Caribbean], right?
I love SciFi & Heroic Fiction; w/ Star Trek, SG1, LOTR, I am fascinated by the proposed "science" (though most, I believe, will never come to pass). But in some I also love the politics & character interaction [see Sci Fi Channel v. of DUNE], or most any book by Orson Scott Card.
In life, much is tangible to me at 48 that was not at 24.
And, interestingly enough, I actually preferred Pirates of the Caribbean and LOTR to Kingdom of Heaven.
Even though Kingdom was directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, mofo!) and takes place in a real world, it's actually not that great of a film...
And I love science fiction.
Always and forever. Haha.

When did I say they didn't exist?
They're concepts, I believe they are there, they just aren't as tangible as rain is.
I'm saying that no matter how interesting something hypothetical is, it will always fall on the way side of something real or empathetic.

Wow, I'm the exact opposite. I despise realistic fiction. =P
...And you don't believe in dimensions?
They totally exist you know...
