On December 21, 2011, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the Treasury Building -- a National Historic Landmark built in the 19th century and located next door to the White House -- was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). According to the USGBC, the Treasury Building is believed to be the oldest building in the world to have received LEED certification.
