Here is a video of a Lionel New York Central class L-2a Mohawk. This locomotive (6-38053) was from the first release that Lionel made in 2003. It has Railsounds 4.0 and two chuffs per revolution, unlike the latest version that has Railsounds 5.0 and four chuffs per revolution. Even with the two chuffs, it's still a nice locomotive.

The train this locomotive is pulling is made up of rolling stock from Atlas O, Lionel, MTH, and Weaver Models.

It's being operated with Lionel Legacy and the track is K-Line tubular with O-81 curves.

The New York Central had the largest roster of 4-8-2 steam locomotives. Often called Mountain types on other railroads, the New York Central named this class of locomotive after the Mohawk River which it followed across north-central New York. The Mohawk River is also the largest tributary of the Hudson River.

The New York Central Mohawks were built between 1916 and 1943. The New York Central roster featured 600 of these locomotives There were four classes of Mohawks on the New York Central, the L-1, L-2, L-3, and L-4, with many sub classes as well.

The New York Central started to receive the L2 Mohawks in 1925. The L-2a is the only Mohawk to built with feed water heaters mounted on top of their smoke boxes. Later sub classes and classes of Mohawks had recessed feed water heaters.

Only two Mohawks survive today. L-3a #3001 is located at the National New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana, and L-2d resides at the National Transportation Museum in St. Louis, Missouri.

  • That is a great lay out you have there! Especially the Locomotives ! Very nice !

  • @LOMBARDISPACKERS1

Thanks for the comment and compliment. It really is a life long collection and I'm looking forward to setting up everything up this year.

  • I love the trains and layout! You must have a huge room to keep it up all year round! I use a 3 foot oval at my folks house when I visit. A perfect circle for at home. I like my parents house better because I can put up the Park I have. (It's Union Pacific Park, and it changes every time I visit.) The track gets moved around and changed so much it doesn't last very long.

Thank you so much for the comment and compliment. I don't have a permanent layout yet, so I get my "fix" with setting these up for the holidays. The room measures close to 12' x 16'. I usually start setting things up in the middle of November and start taking it down in the middle of January. I am looking forward to setting things up this year as well as my next trip to York in October.

  • thanks to your video I'm inspired to buy one of these for my christmas layout I put on every year at the local park, I think the town would enjoy something like that mighty engine hustling around. Also the L2a is the only mohawk I like, it doesn't look generic or a bigger hudson in those respects

Thanks for the comment. Out of all the Mohawks the NYC had, the L-2a is my favorite. The layout you set up each year sounds very nice. I'm sure it's enjoyed by everyone.

Honestly, I don't plan on selling this locomotive. But if I was looking to buy one, I would think that $600 to $700 would be a fair price for a used on in good condition. Lionel also made this locomotive with Railsounds 5.0 and 4 chuffs per revolution, and I would think that version would sell for more.

  • question if you sold this how much would you sell it for???

  • @Fireheart528

I did a quick search on ebay and there is one that ends tonight. Lionel # 6-11105 and it has Railsounds 5.0 and four chuffs per revolution. The one I have has Railsounds 4.0 and two chuffs per revolution. When I get a chance this evening I do a more thorough search tonight to see what I can find.

  • @rj2571 Well theres one right off the bat: do you happen to know where i can find another one like this?
