Little Dorrit is told by Arthur Clennam (Derek Jacobi) that her father (Alec Guinness) is rich and can leave the prison he had lived in for 25 years...
@arianna19742000 I believe that his character mentions being in his 40s in this particular version, so he is not meant to be "38," but older. I always thought that middle aged included anyone between the ages of their late 30s to early 50s. Middle aged is kind of a broad term. I also don't believe we're meant to not notice the age difference as Arthur mentions "how very old" he is and feels.
I hate when they put an actor much older to play a younger man part. Arthur Clennam in the book was supposed to be a man of 38 years of age, while Dereck Jacobi, (the actor who play Arthur) was 50 years old in 1988 when this movie was made (and I think he look much older that his age). It's very hard to feel the genuine love between a 21 year old beautiful young girl and a 50 year old man that look close to 60. The acting is very good on all parts, but the age difference spoiled the movie for me
Yep a Great Clip, and I look forward to seeing this as well on DVD. I was an avid watcher of the BBC version and thought it was great. Can't see why you thought it was that bad.

Does anybody know the titles of the Verdi compositions that can be heard during the entire film, please?
Much appreciate your help :-)

Of course he looks more old than "Little" Dorrit. Clennam is 20 years old than Dorrit. She has 21 and he 41.

Sarah Pickering was perfect.
The only film role she's ever done I think.
I have watched this so many times over more than 15 years that I almost know every line.
"It's paradise."
I don't even want to look at the new version. Pretty mediocre I hear anyway.
