Very good...however the primary partition is not considered to be a logical partition (even though it is).

What's the purpose of partitions?
Are they "only" used to separate the logical drive that has the OS from your personal data logical drives?

Yes, partitions separate a physical drive into more than one logical drive. This allows you separate areas for operating systems (which are targets for viruses) and data and file areas that are safer now. Also you can restore the operating system without the worry of deleted your important files and data. Important files and data should still be backed up to external devices because hard drives fail.
