Josh Greenwood of greenwoodironworks.com and a striker forging a leaf on an 325 pound 18th century German Church Windows anvil. This industrial size anvil somehow survived centuries of use and terrible wars in almost perfect condition. It was found recently, hidden in a late 18th century barn in a little town near Koeln Lindental. There was an early forge next to the barn that was destroyed during World War II. Probably this anvil was hidden in the barn from the invading Allied forces.

Thank you for your insight and I agree: a anvil fantastic anvil at 325 lbs. We just sold it to a lucky knife smith in California. All this anvil's mass is concentrated and supported. It has no springy, ringy appendages. Also, it is ancient, forged of soft wrought iron with a hard steel plate only on top. So it is quiet, and all business. Thanks again JGG

seeing as the description says its 18th century, I'd imagine that it would be made of wrought iron with a harder face? I'm not sure if anvil with a higher carbon face were introduce alot later or not.
