This is a do-it-yourself electronics project in which I replaced the original motor and speed controller in an inexpensive sewing machine (Singer Inspiration 4210) with a heavy-duty DC motor and a closed-loop control system.

The video explains the final product. For the back-story and more details on the hardware and software, see the blog entry:

  • im confused, is tht u or ur wife with the purple finger nail paint?

  • I was wondering if you had any thoughts on a dual motor setup using a high speed motor for fast sewing speeds and a geared-down-high-torque stepping motor connected through a overrunning clutch used for needle positioning and for slow speed single stitching?

They make a 2:3:1 pulley reducer but with dual motors one could have the best of both worlds and with lower cost motors.

  • I like it! The last mode with the single up/down is great, my computerised machine has that labelled as "basting" stitch. Would be useful for tailor tacking etc. as well as embroidery.

  • @rcmoot Any time you wnat to lift the presser foot but don't want the fabric to shift (the needle pins it in place), e.g. sewing corners, sharp curves. I have a needle up-down function and I use it every time I sew, invaluable beyond belief.

  • Very cool mod, this is a really nice work.

  • Awesome. My favorite is the second mode where speed is maintained through a range of resistance. Thanks for posting the "How To" in the blog.

  • Overkill. Thanks though.

  • Stopping in the down mode would be extremely useful, as you always find yourself having to put the needle down by hand before lifting the presser foot for various reasons. Time saver for sure! Great mod!

  • why would you want it to stop in the down mode?

  • Cool mod! It would be great if you also had a more technical version of the video and/or link to instructions.
