Students were dressed as "ultra feminine" and "ultra masculine" stereotypes, such as James Dean and a housewife from the 1950s, to demonstrate what society considers normal within gender roles. What we don't tend to pay attention to, according to graduate teaching assistant Dori Niemann, are the people in between who don't fit these cut-and-dry gender roles.
The role-playing was just one of the many demonstrations that were part of the Gender Unplugged exhibit in the North Quad Tuesday. Here, students passing by could catch a glimpse of themselves in the "Queer Mirror" to get a taste of what it feels like to be harassed. Posters were also on display informing students about current gender-related issues, such as Proposition 8.
