This is a video documentation of the installation of the public sculpture "The Encounter", commissioned by the City of Evanston Illinois. The internationally renowned sculptor, Hubertus von der Goltz, of Berlin, Germany, arrived in Chicago in late December, 2009, to install the 3 ton steel and aluminum artwork on top of a 9 story parking garage in downtown Evanston. The weather was extreme, with very low temperatures and high winds, rain, sleet and snow throughout the three day installation. This is Mr. von der Goltz's second monumental public sculpture in the Chicago area, his first, "Crossing", was installed on LaSalle St. just north of the Chicago River in the summer of 1999. The filmmaker, Peter Hartel, is an Associate Professor in the Film & Video Department of Columbia College Chicago, Cinematography Concentration Coordinator. He is quite please to have been invited to document the installation of this important work, even under difficult production circumstances, due to the absolutely foul weather. Happily, in 20 years, no one will think a thing about the conditions during installation, they'll only marvel at the beautiful and thoughtful work of art that lives in the heart of their city.
