Here I've ditched the idea of individual slots and started using various sized slots.
When we add the weapons you will be able to add more than 1 weapon to each slot, such as a group of 4 medium lasers or a set of 2 machine guns. This will allow a lot of variety but will keep custom designs based mostly on the cannon loadouts. You will also be able to fit different weapons, such as big weapons in small slots, or ACs in Missile slots, for an extra cost.
So it will be possible to equip your commando with an AC2, if you have the weight available.
You won't be able to change heatsink numbers or speed or jumpjets or armour though. Not until later versions of the mechlab which will take in to account full factory refits.
Adding heatsinks can be done in the field though.
engine refits should be out of the question.

@Jonnyborg I have to do some work on how heatsinks are handled by the game engine first, which means reworking my mech dictionary. :) Look out for changing heatsinks in a future version. So far I've got all the other aspects working, still need to work on adding a cost for switching weapons type... can't get that working yet.
