So a shot-list (I'm guessing a SHOT list, not a SHORT list...?) is essentially a live-action movie version on an animated movie's storyboard?

If you want to say something new -- as in, create truly unique films -- you have to use new techniques. The professional techniques are more like guidelines than actual rules.
Pick up a camera and shoot something, learn by experimentation. Just do it!
