Whether it is 1936 or 2010 a man named Queen welcomes everyone -- young and old, rich and poor, neighbors, visitors, family and friends -- to the Great Appalachian Round Dance or as Western North Carolinians call it -- the Mountain Square Dance. This remarkably intact centuries old celebration of life and of the community has deep roots in Southern Appalachian culture and tradition as well as the traditions of our Scots-Irish ancestors. Queen, the "Caller" of the dance shouts out, "Circle Up! Let's all join hands in one big circle!" and the festivities begin." Melinda Messer
