MANUEL SARMIENTO (TV y Radio en Español/Valla Publicitaria) es un escultor en metal, que por el día trabaja en Central Steel & Supply, pero su pasión es la escultura en metal. Sus obras se venden en la galería de arte Artisans' Collectives en Oak Cliff y obtuvo un diplomado de Mountain View College.
"Tengo nueve hermanos y mi familia siempre ha sido mi prioridad. Mi amor al arte comenzó cuando tenía ocho años y en el tercer grado en la primaria Roger Q. Mills hice mi primera escultura de Elvis en plastilina. En la preparatoria Sunset, tomé varias clases de arte pero pensé que con eso no ganaría nada de dinero."
"Cuando me gradué de preparatoria en 1994, obtuve un diplomado en Tecnología en Carrocería y trabajé en ese campo por siete años, restaurando carros exóticos. Un día, después del trabajo dibujé en el cofre de un coche y corté el dibujo con un cortador de plasma. Se lo llevé a mi esposa Patricia, y estaba tan orgullosa de mí que lo colgó en la pared. Con eso volví a tomar interés en el arte y después de un tiempo dejé de trabajar en el taller. Lo chistoso es que después de trabajar en el taller y aprendí cómo manejar el metal y a soldar, volví al colegio para aprender a soldar correctamente y a hacer obras de arte. El profesor de soldadura de Mountain View College Dewayne Roy me ayudó a encontrar mi inspiración y hacer más obras de arte."
"Pensé que sabía cómo soldar, pero me di cuenta que necesitaba aprender la forma correcta tomando clases con Dewayne -- él es un instructor increíble. La mejor parte de mi experiencia de haber asistido a Mountain View fue aprender cómo soldar de la forma correcta; nunca pensé que me ganaría la vida vendiendo mis obras de arte. Saqué un certificado en soldadura artística con un par de especialidades, y en mi trabajo hago muchas obras con partes recicladas. Todas las técnicas que uso en mi trabajo las aprendí en el programa de soldadura de Mountain View y de Dewayne Roy."
Manuel Sarmiento is a metal artist who has a day job at Central Steel & Supply, but his passion is his art - metal sculptures. His work is sold through Artisans' Collectives in Oak Cliff's Bishop Art's District. He earned an associate's degree in Auto Body from Eastfield and studied welding at Mountain View College.
"As a middle child in between nine brothers and sisters, my family was always a priority with me. My love of art first started when I was eight years old and in third grade at Roger Q. Mills Elementary School; I did my first sculpture of Elvis out of clay. At Sunset High School, I took several art classes but I never thought I could make any money out of it.
"When I graduated from high school in 1994, I got an associate degree in Eastfield College's Auto Body Technology program and worked in a body shop for seven years restoring exotic and classic cars. One day after work, I drew a hand on the hood of a car and cut it out with a plasma cutter. I took it to my wife, Patricia; she was proud of it and hung it on the wall. That sparked my interest in art again and after that I quit working at the body shop. The funny thing is that after working at the body shop and learning welding, I still went back to college to learn how to weld to make metal art. Mountain View College Welding instructor Dewayne Roy helped to inspire me to do more art.
"I thought I was self-taught in welding until I learned the correct way to do things from Dewayne - he's such an awesome instructor. The best part of my experience at Mountain View was learning how to weld the correct way; I never thought I'd be doing art for a living. I earned a certificate in artistic welding with a couple of specialization, and in my work, I do a lot of recycled pieces. All of the technique that I use in my work I learned in Mountain View's welding program from Dewayne Roy. "
