In June of 2010, Hendricks Regional Health opened the largest expansion in its history

The new northwest expansion features a 205,000 square-feet addition with six state-of-the-art operating suites (plus unfinished shell space for two more), outpatient services, pre-procedure, recovery areas and a newly expanded cardiac catheterization lab on the first floor; thirty-seven private pre-and-post surgery patient rooms on the second floor; a new cafeteria and central sterile area in the basement; and unfinished space for future expansion on the third floor. The addition will bring the hospital's total square footage to just over 789,000 square feet.

The new operating suites are significantly larger than the old ones (built when the hospital opened in 1962). The greater size will allow for additional equipment and staff for more complex surgical procedures.

The operating rooms themselves feature ceiling-mounted booms that control sophisticated laparoscopic equipment, medical gases, monitors and more. The booms raise, descend and swing equipment into different positions with relative ease. Large-screen, high definition monitors are located in each operating room for viewing X-rays, MRI, CTs or live laparoscopic procedures. The operating room lighting was also specially designed to provide a range of illumination, including spotlights and green lighting to provide visual flexibility throughout the rooms. Green lights can be switched on in place of white lighting to help reduce glare for better viewing of monitors during laparoscopic procedures, allowing the surgeon's eye to better distinguish small details.
