And now we bring into focus two of the winning oil painters, who reveal in very different, yet equally striking ways the relationship between art, and social repression in modern China.

(Li Yuan, Gold Winner for Suffering In China)
In the Mainland the persecution is very wicked, but the hearts of the righteous are very strong After I saw a report about the persecution of Falun Gong, I developed this idea that Ive used as the basis for my painting.

Gold Award winner Li Yuans Suffering In China depicts a household destroyed by the Communist Partys violent persecution of Falun Gong. The piece of paper clutched in this mans hand indicates that he has been interred in a brainwashing center, to force him to give up his spiritual practice. In the face of tragedy, the young widow endures with restraint and inner strength all of which come out in the finished work.

Because Im also a spiritual person. And so I think that as someone who is both an artist and a spiritual person you have a certain responsibility. Its just like the artists of old; the early Christians had suffered persecution, and later artists took it as their duty to represent this. I think that being an artist means having a responsibility in society.

Its perhaps no wonder that, in this first-of-its kind global forum for Chinese artists to freely express themselves and share their work, the theme of spirituality, and the Chinese regimes oppression of spirituality, should take center stage.

Indeed, in a bitterly ironic twist of fate oil painting competition Silver Award winner Yiming Fan, was himself arrested and imprisoned in a labor camp for practicing Falun Gong. He was apparently specially targeted by communist authorities shortly after he submitted his winning painting, entitled Tibetan Boy.

(Damon Noto, Competition Host)
Around the time of the Olympics, he was jailed and put in a forced labor camp in Mainland China where he remains today. Unfortunately this is because he practices Falun Gong. Which is a traditional practice in Mainland China that has been persecuted since 1999. This is something that we at NTDTV are all deeply saddened by, and we hope will come to an end in the near future.

Its a sign of the unique opportunity to share their work that this competition represents to Chinese artists, that they are willing to risk personal danger to participate. Though Yiming Fans situation is still dire, and he could not be reached for comment by independent media, his fellow competitor, Gold winner Li Yuan shared his own thoughts on the value of NTDs competition series.

I think that New Tang Dynasty Television holding this kind of competition can really spark a return to the right basis for the arts, which is a very meaningful idea, and this can have a profound historical effect. I think people will gradually be clearer and clearer about this: Ive seen that the various competitions in this series held by NTD have really all been so comprehensive, and with such a deep level of culture and meaning.
