If you listen to this song long enough and compare it to Wanna be startin somethin, billie jean, beat it and thriller, it sounds too poppy.

I think Night Line is more of a R&B song, with a sound that's almost a  boogie-woogie, & it shouldn't be compared to Billie Jean, Thriller, etc., any more than you'd compare, say, Gone Too Soon, or Human Nature with those songs. Michael could & did sing just about all types of songs, masterfully.
