  • At least 15% of this is permeable interlocking concrete pavement. Permeable

    pavements are popular because the German approach to environmental

    protection is not simply based on attenuating impacts from development. They

    consider the benefits of the natural environment to society. North American

    English would translate the German notion of a healthy environment as environmental

    quality.

  • PICPs were introduced into North America in the 1990s. Since that time, they

    have started to gain acceptance in Canada and the U.S., with recent surveys by

    ICPI indicating a doubling of consumption year over year and PICPs representing

    over 2% of all paver installations. Compared to North America, Germany

    consumes about 12 times more interlocking concrete pavement annually per

    capita.
