1970 Berkeley Riots - My First Quarter at Berkeley

I shot "My First Quarter at Berkeley" in Spring 1970, during the height of the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. It was my first quarter at college and I was relieved when then Governor Reagan shut school down in April so that I only needed to get a "pass" for my first quarter. Even though it was a tragic time, there was humor in our actions... and I love the humorous counterpoint of the Cal Marching Band during the riot footage.

I was too young to remember this at the time, but my mom was working as a secretary in Sproul Hall while these protests were going on. She said they had to close all the windows tight because of tear gas, but even so, some got in and made her feel ill. So sad that the police reacted the way they did. Hopefully, things are different now.
