Okay so basically i think the song is about someone who went through a hard time in their life.
Throughout the song they are thinking about how their friend helped them through their hard time.

"We listen to the radio play all night... didn't want to go home to another fight, through all the hard times in my life, those nights kept me alive."

I think he is thanking his friend for being there for him when he was going through a hard time.
