"The song tells the story of Lord Trevelyan who brought a supply of corn back from America in a bid to battle starvation during the potato famine in the mid-nineteenth century.

Unfortunately it was Indian corn, too hard to be milled, so useless. However, local people thought it would save them and so broke into the stores, were arrested, and subsequently deported to Australia.

"The song could be about anyone Scots, Irish, English. It is about poor innocent people and how they are victims of natural disasters. It's easy to say why it's been so popular in Glasgow because in 1846, the year the song's set, over 150,000 Irishmen, women, and children fled to the city where many were treated with generosity. But I've heard the song sung everywhere from San Francisco to Melbourne."

The Fields of Athenry

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity."

By a lonely harbor wall, she watched the last star fall
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived to hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

  • Fuck off with that barrel of shite info ye have up. You make Trevaleyn out to be a feller who tried to feed the starving irish?! He was the one who said God sent the famine to teach the irish a lesson. Carlyluvs made no mention of the british armed forces that guarded the food exported out of ireland between 1845 and 1850, nor the british landlords removng starving men women and children. As well as the 150 years of denial.

There was enough food to feed the entire irish population in 1845

  • @fatherted101 Trevalyan was never a good guy and I never said he was. He actually told the public that he was trying to help with the starvation but in reality the 'corn' he brought back to feed the masses was shit and not worth a wank. If I caused confusion with what I wrote, my apologies to you good sir.

    Nice upload, love it.

  • @ fatherted101: Signed. There had always been enough to eat. They always handled shit like that, till they passed on the role of the worlds greatest opressor to the USA. Which do not mind the Irish, anyway.

  • Mon the hoops!

  • 26+6=1

  • There was nothing "natural" about the Great Hunger. The Brits did damn little to help.

  • lollll i think its hail mary let the free birds fly

  • The song is awesome but the info is a joke. Makes it sound like poor Trevelyan just made an honest mistake. The bastard made it his mission to starve as many Irishmen as possible.

  • .....soo lange gesucht und endlich gefunden. Ich verbinde viele schöne Abende im Irish Pub im Finngans Wake in Hamburg mit diesem Lied. Ich widme es meinen damals wundervollen und besten Freunden Ingo&Markus.....
