Peace Corps Costa Rica is no joke. In this video you will see the dangers that I face on a daily basis: fallen bridges, vicious anteaters, and extremely venomous tarantulas. So if you think that volunteering in Costa Rica is Posh Corps, you can stick this video in your pipe and smoke it !
Named for its white color, Rio Blanco is naturally dyed by sulfurs released into the river by the nearby volcano Miravalles. During the last rainy season, it poured so hard that the Rio Blanco flooded a community and swelled to the point that it took out Fortuna's most important bridge. By watching the video that I bravely recorded, you can get a good idea by how much the river needed to rise in order to reach and devour the structure.
My girlfriend and I were hanging out in her backyard when suddenly we heard the dog barking franticly at a fury ant-loving intruder. You guessed it! It was none other than a Vermilingua oso ormiguero! If you ever come across one of these animals, be very careful for they ARE fierce... actually no not really, but they can defend themselves rather well: Their nails are razor sharp and they attack by bear hugging their arms and claws around their enemy. Some folks here call them "mataperros" (dogkillers). Supposedly, anteaters attack dogs, approaching them from beneath and wrapping their stronghold position around the dogs' chests and necks, and with their "chins" pressed against the constricted dogs' snouts, they stick their long skinny tongues into dogs' noses, poking holes into their brains and killing them. Pretty powerful stuff.
