  • poor randori.Anyway the hole set is exeptionel!

  • @trelolog1 I agree with the first part. I was going through a phase where I was experimenting with... that kind of shitty randori. No joke.

  • That Uke needs to commit more when he does his shomen uchi. Looks like he's wavin a handkerchief.

  • @krichanthebatman There's different styles of that strike, but I know what you mean.

Was practicing sankyo today (ushiro kubijime) and what I found worked for me is making sure my center is connected to uke by turning slightly towards uke and then doing the sword cut down uke's center, focusing on the tip of the elbow as if it were the tip of the bokken, with good extension in my arms. That way I got away from using strength. Suwari waza is hard for me though because of toe and hip problems (no bendie!).

  • @canajaneh I think I know what you mean. I don't do sankyo quite like this anymore, and I know about the touching the elbow early. You may find if you draw the hand towards you, instead of the traditional sword cut of the sankyo grip, it allows you to do it with much less strength. This is an upper body heavy test to me in retrospect, but my sankyo doesn't feel pushy at all. I think of that cut more like kaiten nage at this point - mean to pivot the shoulder in its natural movement, notpower

In the ura version, you disconnect from your centre and uke's centre. I wouldn't be able to do that - haven't got the physical strength. In the omote version, first time round, if I had done that in my test, it would have been an instant fail (putting the hand on the elbow before the cut).

I wasn't being critical, I was just saying I'd never seen it done that way. I do the more basic trap-under-the-shoulder because I can't get away with doing sankyo straight up.

  • @canajaneh Done which way? Suwari waza? Omote and Ura? I think I was going for pretty traditional variations here. No uchi, "under the arm" shenanigans.

  • @undoo89 wow, that's sweet. nidan, tested under yamada sensei, though a year off for a knee repair. And at our dojo, serious students 3rd/2nd/ kyu and up are sometimes asked to wear hakama early. I took it off getting ready for shodan, and returned to it after the test. Open Sky Aikido in NC - we're friendly, you're welcome anytime.

  • what grade are you now? And where you wearing a hakama because you were tested for shodan at the same time?

it was one of the few truly responsable 2kyu test recorded online. good job

  • I have never seen a sankyo done that way.
