@kookylmh He had to go on the run but he never got caught :(
At the end you see him as a slightly older man and he falls and dies, but I found it pretty unsatisfying (both in the book and the film, as he has the same fate in both) - he has such a quick death. He never got what he deserved.

The sad thing is, is that they didn't even find the body and he wasn't brought to proper justice. He accidentally dies.
