"Come On Eileen" was a single released by Dexys Midnight Runners in 1982. The song was written by Kevin Rowland, "Big" Jim Paterson, and Billy Adams; it was produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. It originally appeared on the album Too-Rye-Ay. It was their first #1 hit in the United Kingdom since 1980's "Geno".

The song won Best British Single at the 1983 Brit Awards.

In the British charts, the song spent four weeks at number one in August 1982. This success was repeated around the globe; spending five weeks as the Kent Report's number one in Australia and reaching number one in April 1983 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

**********Lyrics**********

Come on, Eileen
Come on, Eileen

Poor old Johnny Ray, sounded sad upon the radio;
He moved a million hearts in mono.
Our mothers used to sing along, who'd blame them?

You're grown (You're grown up)
So grown (So grown up)
Now I must say more than ever

Come on, Eileen
Toora, loora, toora loorye aye
and we can sing just like our fathers

Come on, Eileen,
oh, I swear (well, he means) at this moment
You mean everything
You in that dress
oh, my thoughts I confess
verge on the dirty

Ah, come on, Eileen

Come on, Eileen

These people round here
wear beaten down eyes, sun in smoke dried faces
resigned to what their fate is
But not us (no, never)
no, not us (no, never)
we are far too young and clever
Remember!

Toora, loora, toora, loorye, aye
Eileen, I'll let this tune forever
Toora, loora, toora, loorye, aye
Eileen, I'll let this tune forever

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (well, he means)
Ah, come on let's
take off everything
That pretty red dress, Oh, Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah, come on let's, ah, come on, Eileen
Come on, Eileen
Oh, I swear (well, he means)
at this moment you mean everything

Come on, Eileen, tooloorye, aye.
Come on, Eileen, tooloorye, aye, toora, toora tooloorye
Oh, Eileen.
I said: come on, Eileen. Oh, come on, Eileen
We are far too young and clever
And things won't ever change
And I say:

Toora, loora, toora loorye, aye.

Come On Eileen,
oh I swear (well he means) at this moment
You mean everything to me
Oh, to me.
Oh, Eileen.
You mean everything.

  • I'm not patriotic in the slightest, but if this was the British national anthem, i'd stand and sing, with my hand on my heart and a tear in my eye every single time it was played. It's fucking brilliant.

  • 1983 hatte ich auch solche schuhe und solche Hosen und ich liebe diesen Song heute noch.

  • I used to hate this song when I was a kid coz they were dirty.

But now I get the true substance out of this song. Only now I see that Eileen doesn't have a bra.
