Lyrics: [ Moon Song ]

Followed your road till the sky ran out
Followed your love till love was in doubt
Followed your love till it never really was at all
Feeling stupid and hollow
Now the moon's gonna' follow me home

Waited for you till the snow fell down
Over my skin like a thin nightgown
Waited for you but you never came around at all
Waited for you till they pulled the plug
Bartender emptied out his big tip jug
They swept all the floors
Vacuumed the rugs and went home
Drank all I could swallow
Now the moon's gonna' follow me home

Time go easy on me tonight
'cause I'm one of the lost sheep alright
Take what you must, take what you must
Of what I've lost as I have roamed
Let the moon follow me home

Followed your tears with a washing pail
I followed your story I followed your tail
Followed you straight through the
Doors of your jail cell too
Followed your voice in the darkness soft
A wind came through and carried it off
I followed your love till it never really was at all
Drank all I could swallow
Now the moon's gonna' follow me home
Drank all I could swallow
Now the moon's gonna' follow me home

  • Beautiful. Where is she playing this??? And does anyone have the chords for this song?

  • yeah, great is'nt it...

Open D Tuning: DADGBD Capo: 5

It may be easier to use std. tuning with e.g. capo 4 and a C chord.

    Lyrics and tabs are here:

  • Such a sad, heartwrenching song...but so amazing...and performed by the greatest artist in the world.

  • Masterful songwriting about a cold, dead end road - love the internal rhyming and, of course, the performance.

  • love it! : )

  • I love Patty!

  • @davestul Sorry, but this song is NOT on "Children Running Through," at least not on the version I have.

Patty's DVD is the first place I've found it.

You might like Emmylou Harris' version on "All I Intended to Be." It's special.

Thanks again to Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains for introducing some of us to Patty on one of the Chieftains' "Plank Road" albums.

  • Does anyone know where I can find the studio version? It's not on iTunes anymore :/

  • JESUS SO BLESSED HER. AMEN

  • @hannahpdx1 It's from a CD called "Children Running Through". A very good CD!

  • What album is this from!?

  • I kinda knew of Patty, but never really looked into her music. Caught her on Austin City Limits show on PBS last night and OMG! Why didn't I know of her sooner? Am now getting all her stuff. AMAZING!! :D

  • standard tuning capo on the sixth fret. playing D G A

  • I love Patty so much, even when songs like this break my heart....
