Jon and Cari go for a hike! Cari is 10 months post Achilles Tendon tear surgery and is anxious to get moving. This was our "She's Back!!!" excursion which we planned as part of our summer vacation. Cari mapped out the route to the "subway" hike and we originally wanted to do from the top down, but flash flood warnings prevented us from doing the entire hike. We didn't know the area well enough to determine if even doing the hike from the bottom up was even safe for this day. Flash floods killed a guy just days before we got there, and safety was on the highest alert.
Cari's Achilles' Tendon is doing great, although the stability in her foot is still not 100%. There were many points during this hike that she couldn't "feel" her footing, and that will only come with time. The Achilles Tendon Rupture is one of the slowest healing injuries to occur. It is such a nasty break in lifestyle and can only be described as being "terrible."
Cari is a soldier though and as tough as they come. She says she is doing so well (despite complications from the surgery) because she is not letting her injury keep her down. She continues to do therapy and exercises daily, walks her active beagles - "Walter and Bindy" and lifts weights. If she were not so active, her recovery would not be going so smoothly.

  • Great video! Good thing I watched the video or I wouldn't have known that my shoes would be inadequate for this hike. My shoes would have been soaked

  • @n4rwhalsintheocean Yeah, we used some really durable sandles. Our feet were pretty wrecked afterwards, but it was a pretty good option. I don't think there are really any great ways to protect your feet out there. You'll love the hike though!

  • Congrats on getting through your surgery and making it back into the Subway!

A group of us hiked to the same location you guys were at on October 29th of this year. My guess is that you went in before August? When we went back into the waterfall, the log you video taped was no longer there. Word has it that a big flash flood in the summer swept through and really cleaned out the canyon. Glad to see you overcame your obstacle and conquered another. Thanks for sharing!

  • @fastpony71 We were there in Late July. Thanks for your comment, that is really interesting that the big log is gone. Do you have any video? I hear the water is super cold about now.... we wanna go back!

  • I hiked down that trail with my scout troop. It was brutal but very fun. i remember i had a emergency pack that had a fish hook and line, i wraped it around a stick and caught to fish. Sadly on the way back i hooked my finger about a inch deep and had to pull it out the barb and all. IT SUCKED but it was one of my most favorite hikes of all.

  • @scoutchuck that's unbelievable... what a bummer! Hope you get better soon. I can imagine the trip is 100% different in the winter. Must be freeeeeeezzzzziiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngg! The water is pretty cold in the summer in 95 degree heat.

    Did you take pictures?

  • @fitnesstrainingbyjon I blew out my left calf at Red Rock Canyon four days before the scheduled Subway hike. Needless to say, I was sick! Drove by the parking lot the day before (just had too) and an EMS and four rangers were extracting someone out (hypothermia). Three inches of snow at Lava Point.

  • @scoutchuck bring a video camera and post it as a video response! We'd love to see what it looks like in November!!!!!

  • Thanks for the "Bottom Up" tour! Looking forward to a November 2010 trip, but it will be colder I'm sure!
