A number of social activists in BC are undertaking their own Poverty Olympics relay, complete with their own Poverty torch and mascots: Chewy the Rat, Itchy the Bedbug, and Creepy the Cockroach. This group plans to have rallies to raise awareness about child poverty and social housing across BC in contrast to the "corporate party message" of the 2010 Olympics.

The Poverty Olympics Vancouver Rally is planned for February 7th, 2010. Check the website on the video for more details.

  • I dont see the big wait for loading Smellyfooty, perhaps your connection doesn't do HD videos wall.

Foxdefense: overweight women wearing costume jewlery can't live in poverty on North America? Well, on this continent most people have access to water and food; though not necessarily their own - it is often communally shared in appalling conditions. Plus, nutritious food is really expensive so hungry people fill up on junk which ironically creates obesity - which is a sign of poverty.

  • you are trruly entitled to your own oppinion

  • Neverless it's still an issue, we should be spending that money on helping our own neighbors on serious issues rather then a two week party.

The Olympics is horrible management or resources, and I as a tax payer is against it.

  • Do something about it then, stop blaming the government, you are homeless for a reason, you live in Canada you can always find a job for god sakes. I'd love to see you people in a third world country where there are no jobs or no opportunity for advancement. Idiots you have no clue how good Canadians have it.

  • But don't get me wrong I'm not saying don't help these people in poverty. There are some who deserve it and some don't I would rather have my tax dollars go to the olympics than to a broken home with bad parents who aren't even grateful for the help. I've overheard people laughing about how they are living for free off welfare when I was outside one of the units.

  • You don't need to have money to have a clean house or be a respectable person. Vegetables, bread, it's cheap. I do realise a lot of people have bad luck and deserve help but from what I've seen, the majority are scumbags. I've had to go inside children's bedrooms that smelled atrocious because they would wet the bed but hte parents would never clean or change the sheets. I mean come on, seriously? Do you pretoestors know the type of people you are sticking up for?

  • I work in a co-op housing complex renovating it. All the people are in poverty. I use to feel bad for these people until I saw a good %70 bring it upon themselves. They're too lazy to work and collect welfare, they have bad hygeine, they don't give a shit about their kids and raise them in a bad environment. Several units are dirty, filthy, and have garbage, dirt, and dirty laundry everywhere. I've even seen cat feces all over the carpets.

  • Who paid for the T- Shirts - and why is the rat wearing lots of jewerly and the rat isn't under fed You complain about the arena - convention centre and other venues which will be bring revenue to the area helping the community in the future. There was poverty and homeless prior the Olympics and there will be the same after. 80% of the world they have no water - and you complain about something that brings people together - fight the companies that spend 100s of Billions on weapons .....

  • fuck youtube. Keep showing half-naked teens for show on youtube but censor real important issues that "special-interest" groups(like the government) might have a hard time dealing with when it comes to public policy. Fuck you, youtube and your special-interest groups!

be the REAL deal. I might actually start a group called the REAL(player) DEAL.

good idea? Bad idea? Screw you in any way... too late.
