Pahang, 5 May 2008 -- The quiet villages along Sungai Pahang came to life with the 2008 Sungai Pahang International Bamboo Rafting Expedition (Ekspedisi Berakit Antarabangsa Sungai Pahang), which was held from April 27 till May 4.

The villagers from the seven kampung, which were Kampung Jeram Landak, Kampung Pulau Tawar, Kampung Pulau Pasir Mandi, Kampung Guai, Kampung Pesagi, Kampung Mambang, and Kampung Ganchong, greeted the participants and guests warmly with their household feasts (commonly known in Malay Language as kenduri) and cultural shows. Such performers included the legendary Roslan Madun, who sang the celebrated theme for Sungai Pahang, "Menghilir Sungai Pahang".

"I aspire to give everyone the real deal during this expedition," said Amran bin Abd Rahman, State Director of Tourism Malaysia Pahang. "I want the participants and guests to have a taste on what it's like living in a traditional village in Pahang. The lifestyle, the culture, the traditions, and the like."

"It's definitely a big cultural change for most people. Some may like it, some may not," he added. "I do hope that this would be the start of something good before we proceed to attract tourists to experience this different side of Malaysia."

KDYTM Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah officiated the expedition at the third pit stop, Kampung Guai, and proceeded to venture down part of Sungai Pahang along with the other participants.

82 teams from around Malaysia participated in the eight-day-and-seven-night expedition, which flagged off at Bandar Kuala Lipis and ended at Bandar Diraja Pekan.

Participating teams included among others, Time Engineering, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), Pahang Skills Development Centre (PSDC), and the Federal Marine Police (Eastern District).

Age was no matter to the Mayor of Johor Bahru, YB Dato' Mohd Naim bin Nasir, as he also hopped on the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) raft, which was one of the winners for the Most Beautiful Raft category, accompanying the rafters on the cruise down Sungai Pahang.

It was a scorching 329km ride down Sungai Pahang towards the finish line, but the hot weather did not dampen the rafters' spirits. The participants rowed down the river aboard the bamboo rafts, built by the orang asli in Malaysia, singing traditional Malay songs and greeting the villagers by the river as they passed by.

Participants got in touch with nature during the laidback cruise, hearing nothing but the sounds of the trees rustling and the gentle turns of the water. As they neared the last pit stop at the Pekan Riverfront, adrenaline soared as they gave the last of their all to be the first to finish the expedition.

Although the expedition was not intended to be a competition, participants were presented with cash prizes nonetheless.

Winners include The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), who clinched the Most Beautiful Raft category, taking home a prize of RM1,500, while Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) won the Best Overall category, pocketing RM2,000 in their coffers.

The ever-welcoming folks at the villages were not left out on the prize-giving frenzy too. Kampung Mambang bagged the Best Pit Stop (Performances), while Kampung Pulau Pasir Mandi the Best Pit Stop (Kenduri Kampung), and Best Overall Pit Stop, Kampung Pesagi, which won them a cash prize of RM2,000.

Other winners include JPS Pekan, Tomistoma Schlegeli, Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor, Belia Kampung Baru Pekan, KESPADA, and many more.

Organisers kena pastikan tahun depan semua baik. Kesian Navy, merajuk sebab tak dapat nombor satu. Padahal diorang sampai dulu. Tak baik aniaya orang, walaupun takde niat.

Orang2 yang pernah join ekspedisi ni kata tahun ni tak best kalau bandingkan dengan tahun2 lepas. Tahun depan pastikan semua ok yek. Kurang2kan dangdut tu.

  • Hope the organisers don't change the pit stops next year. And make sure the river stays clean after the expedition. Next year, hold the rubbish collection competition everyday.

I miss the pakciks and makciks whose house we stayed at T_T I'm definitely joining again. Go UIA Kuantan! LOL XD
