My protestant friends don't understand why Catholic Masses often have horrifying sounding movements such as this. I ask them what part of, "O King, O King of awful and terrible majesty," they don't understand. The very concept of God is supposed to be horrifying; it is horrifying. It is not supposed to be a comforting idea. The Good News of Christianity is that this terrifying entity happens to *like* us.
