Karen Carpenter's "If I Had You", recorded for her 1980 solo album. Along with Karen's amazing vocals, this track features the talents of some great names in Smooth Jazz including Bob James and Michael Brecker.

This song was released on the Carpenters "Lovelines" CD in 1989, and on the 1996 CD release of her solo album titled "Karen Carpenter".

I can't believe Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss and Richard Carpenter all told Karen not to release this album. How is this any worse than what the Carpenters were doing around the same time?? I mean christ almighty, if Ethel Merman could release her disco album, I'm sure Karen would've been perfectly fine to release this. All that bullshit about "protecting her from criticism", more like protecting their control over Karen.

In the last twenty seconds of this audio you can really hear the difference in Phil Ramone's original mix compared to how Richard remixed it, Richard has her drenched in reverb. He did the same with 'My Body Keeps Changing My Mind' for the box set release.

I've never seen Karen they way these pictures show. It seems she had a personality buried that finally broke free. This video is quite a revelation. Till now she was regulated to sing in a particular way, which ironically, has made her famous. But this is different and shows Karen's wide range of talent.
