Nobel Peace laureate and democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has asked for our help. Suu Kyi said, "More than ever we need our friends to be watchdogs. You have to watch what is going on in Burma."
There is progress taking place in Burma now. Suu Kyi's freedom and election into parliament is a sign of that. But until the progress is lasting and we know the people are really benefiting from reforms, it is vital for the U.S. to retain some leverage — we must keep sanctions in place.
