An extra special night dive at Blairgowrie Marina (Yacht Club) on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne, Australia.... where divers frequent throughout the year... possibly the most exciting and popular pier dive in Melbourne!
We know that Wobbegong Sharks are coming closer to our piers as more fish such as Salmon and Mullet come in to the shallows in the Summer months. The water was 17 degrees on the day of our dive (12th Nov.) We'd heard a Wobby was spotted at Rye Pier but didn't expect to see it or another one at Blairgowrie... but what an awesome surprise when we did. Five photographers with flash guns and video lights meant the shark didn't stay around for long and soon enough it swam away. It did head towards shallower water, so hopefully it might be there another day. The footage is all shot with a GoPro and I used a single Big Blue 30 watt LED without a diffuser - my first night dive with the GoPro, just to see how it handled the low light while using a very powerful LED video light. Some footage worked beautifully such as the leatherjackets in front of a pylon, while other shots of a seahorse on kelp didn't work well at all, and I haven't edited any of that footage into the video. I'm going to use a diffuser next time and possibly set up twin 30 watt lights on a base plate to see how it performs with all-round lighting. Once again, I'm having a great time with the GoPro, it's lots of fun, of course weighs nothing at all, battery lasted over an hour (our dive time was 100 minutes and it only gave up 5 minutes before we got out, and I was using the LCD screen the entire dive). Sit back, relax, enjoy!
Great job with the video, lots to see. that light setup sounds interesting and seemed to work well from what is in the video. Some beautiful colours, especially the nudibranch. Good to hear the LCD works well, I'm thinking of getting one to help with the framing problem. Was this the HD1 or HD2(latest model) Gopro. Nice steady footage too. What's it like there in the day for snorkellers? tried Rye Pier a couple of weeks ago and it was great.. see my video with the seals. Thanks for sharing

Great video Dave, you've packed so many things into the four minutes it's hard to grasp you saw all that in a single dive. Certainly makes diving around Melbourne look appealing! Loving the shark!
