(Part 1) Artist Paul Hertz Hertz describes his generative system, with particular attention to the algorithms and rules that drive his geometric tiling patterns. Parametric spaces derived from the rules are used as structural source material for a wide range of other artistic practices, including musical composition, theatrical performance, texts, and lectures. Ignotus the Mage, dysfunctional fortuneteller, makes a cameo appearance. Created for an artist's talk at Algorists 2009, a group show of algorithmic art at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara.
