On the eve of the Second Life Community Convention, here's a retro present for the community. While trying to generate some archival screen shots, Andrew and I managed to get a build running of Second Life circa August 2001. We called it "LindenWorld" back in those days. Here's a video showing what we looked like back then. I apologize in advance for the movie quality - I'm an engineer, not an artist, and I shot and narrated this in one take.

ok how could they remove the cool water and cool terraforming and the frikkin flashlight!!! bring back the good stuff and the physics engine back then was not so bad and for 2001 these graphics and stuff are really not so bad. this is very cool the land deforms like Red Faction engine imagine the water like that now with these days graphics and shaders... cuz now the water is just meh.. either way cool stuff
I'm SO glad I don't have to drop grenades to terraform my land now! I'll NEVER complain about terrforming again! Ever.. I promise... well.. for not for at least a day anyway...
I'd love to have rain back, even if it rains indoors. (After all, the wind still blows indoors and Linden trees blow through walls.) This is an awesome video. Before this the most I'd seen of the early days were a couple of still pictures.
