The old tree Gildergreen in Whiterun has died, and you are sent to bring the sap of Eldergleam to revive it. If you take Maurice with you, you can choose to ask the old tree for a sapling and bring it back to the city, instead of stabbing the old tree with Nettlebane.

The sapling grows inside the dead old tree (a bug) and you can only see the outer branches poking weirdly out of the trunk. In order to remove the dead Gildergreen, open the console using the '~' key, click on the dead trunk of Gildergreen (be careful where you click), enter "markfordelete" without the quotation marks into the console, exit the console by pressing ~ again, save your game (best use a new save slot) and reload it. Now you should see the sapling instead.

  • Sigh. Another reason playing on the PS3 makes dealing with programming bugs much harder.

  • @congokong87 I'm a PC player, so I understand why Bethesda develops for consoles (pirating and such), but they were kinda dickish about what they did on the PS3 with Skyrim. The game wasn't ready.

  • I have a 360 so I can't put in any codes to fix the bug -_-.

  • @TheLarkaanimation Sorry... edited the title

  • I didn't like the sapling, so I reloaded and got Maurice killed, lol.

I did, however, felt bad for hurting the Eldergleam...

  • @RickyPrescott Yeah... Maurice is insane and dies easily. I liked the challenge of bringing him there alive.

  • mirilion79 thank you so much for the console command. it always urked me to see the dead trunk where the new sappling should be. you rock dude!

  • @Bob30737 You have to wait after completing the quest with the Maurice ending, until you see the sapling grow out of the dead tree. Other than that I have no idea... sorry :(

  • @mirilion79 i need your help, the sapling isn't there.

i found the whole "markfordelete thing" on TES wiki but they dont seem to mention the bug i'm having. I was woundering if you had any ideas.
