The Listening-Reading method helps us deal with audio that is far beyond our current level of comprehension. If works by flooding our brain with masses of input in our target language, where while simultaneously reading the same content in our own language.

I first learned the L-R method from the forums of http://how-to-learn-any-language.com

  • Uploaded on my birthday!

Nice one... but I'm unable to practice in any way when I'm learning entirely through online resources. I only decided to learn this language because it's a challenge... not like French, that was too easy.

  • @JayashriV If you are struggling to find resources, you could always download the free courses made by the US government. See my videos on DLI and FSI courses for details and links. Both courses are very good.

  • Thank you for explaining this reading - listening method. You are generous with your time. I will employ this and look out for unabridged audio books.

  • @srn501 I am glad you find it useful. Thanks for letting me know.

  • ...cont... It's still good for listening comprehension, and for acquiring some vocabulary, but it's not the best example of native content.

  • This is a great technique, but I think there's one flaw in your especific approach: you should, IMO, be reading Czech literature translated to English, not the other way around. I don't know about the state of the Czech translator community, but in Brazil, publishing companies don't always go for the best professionals, and that frequently results in less than optimum translations, sometimes plagued with awkward unnatural constructions, and even blatant mistakes.

  • @melamed36 No - problém s češtinou je, alespoň ten základní, že je tam flexe... - což v angličtině není (nebo alesúoň minimální) - v tom vidím tu největší obtíž s tímto jazykem. Hodně Božího požehnání - God bless You, friend!

  • Kamaráde, tak ty se chceš naučit češtinu? Tak to ti dá dost práce, ale já ti fandím... :)

  • Wow! Thanks for this ingenious tip. Now I can kill three birds with one stone. I can practice my target language, as well as create images in my brain to match certain words in order to increase my TL vocabulary, as well as get my reading in all at the same time! Thanks again for sharing your methods and ideas. I'm sure they will save many people a lot of time and trouble as they did for me.

  • @christopheclugston Thanks for the heads-up... actually the pages seem to be working for me, in the US. Can you let me know specific links that aren't working for you?

  • @slatterypod Your links from your landing page do not work

  • Oops, I see now that the "the next step" comment was in shadowing video not this one. My bad.

  • This is really great because I have been following the techniques on HTLAL, but it's another thing completely to see something actually demonstrating how to use some of these, such as the L-R method.

A question: at the end of the video, you mention an 'extensive listening' video to show "the next step" in listening stages. I do not see any "how to listen 005"? Is it labeled differently, or did you cover the topic in another video somewhere and decide not to record 005?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting this great explanation of the Listening-Reading method!

    I have developed a website for listening-while-reading at: DingLabs.com

There is a growing library of material in various languages at: library.dinglabs.com

(no Czech content yet; contributions welcome!)

So far, the content is pure L2 (audio and text), but it might be good to add a mix (L2 audio with L1 text) to help beginners.
