http://www.steviesnacks.com - Lesson 7 in the "5 essential blues boxes for guitar". In this lesson I take an in-depth look at the box that I call "The Major Root Box", or Box 5.

The free lesson reviews the structure of box 5, and explains the common uses for each note in this box.

The 34 minute full version goes into more detail, covering topics like
-Hidden notes in this box
-Auxiliary and slide-in notes
-Hendrix style hammer-on chords
-Transitions in/out of box 5

  • this is Major Pentatonic in Emajor ? im kind of confused... i know it isnt about scales, but I need to know what is the root... etc...

  • @whackyshackyidiot As it relates to scales, this shape basically follows the major pentatonic, with the root at the top right of the box on the High E string.

  • I really dont get the way you describe this box as being like the major scale, is it not just exactly the same as the pentatonic scale but in a different position and therefore a different key? or did you only mean its like the major scale RELATIVE to the initial key?

  • Parts of this shape fall on the major pentatonic scale, in the same key, but the point of all of this is not to teach scales.

  • what you call "boxes" I call the pentatonic scale, in 5 positions... great job teaching it though

  • If you watch the first couple of lessons in this series, you'll see that what I'm teaching is not exactly scales, rather a set of shapes that's based around common licks. But at certain places it does line up with the scales.

  • How about some "Little Wing" Lessons, Anthony??? Please man!!

  • @marcboarder It's not the pentatonic scale in 5 positions it's the pentatonic and major scale mixed.

  • dude im lost on the lesson but the blues mesmerizes me

  • I could follow all previous boxes videos but this one ... is it supposed to start on my 11th fret and your 12th fret? I just couldn't put the box chart position with the video example. Am I totally wrong?

  • good

  • your prob sick of answering questions like this, but is the idea of this box that you can only really play it over a certain chord in the sequence? its the same feel as i get with the BB box, sometimes it don't sound right? i take it this is in a way the same as how modes are used? and btw, thanks a lot really appreciate the lessons, ill check your website out aswell.

  • if u take any minor pentatonic scale say Em12th fret1-4 1-3 1-3 1-3 1-4 1-4 move it back 3 frets and it is EMaj so take any box and move it back three frets and it becomes Major ie John Mayer uses it alot but the root in Em starts with your index finger 12th fret low E string and Major starts with your pinky on 12th fret

  • Boxes 1,2 & 4 are the keys pentatonic minor. Box 3 is the pentatonic major of the IV chord and box 5 is the pentatonic major of the I chord. Do you ever actually use the two boxes you skipped? (box 2/3 maj/min....box 4/5 maj/min) I always consider box 5/min to be part of box 1/min when I play...and box 3/min has a great lick on strings 2-3. Hope that made sense:)
