The audio recording of the first version of Chelsea Hotel - before it became Chelsea Hotel #2 - from Leonard Cohen's 1972 concert in Tel Aviv is complemented by images of Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin (whose liaison with Cohen at the Chelsea Hotel led to the creation of the song), the Chelsea Hotel, and others.

Note: The video mistakenly lists the song as part of the April 20, 1972 Leonard Cohen concert in Jerusalem; it is actually from the April 19, 1972 concert in Tel Aviv.

  • Beauty. Janis, coffee when we meet. A bash with Jim, Brian, BIll, Allen, Kahlil, Kurt, Jimi and the gang. Thank You for the Beauty, you guys.

  • She was such a young girl really.

  • epic

  • For those who remember it well in the Chelsea Hotel, how about the less famous version, #1? As good as number two but never released on any LC album. Hard one to find, his hommage to Janis while his old friends 'had gone queer!'

  • the first version of CHELSEA HOTEL, much different from the very famous CH #2 found on the first Leonard Album. It sizzles.

  • Thanks, this is beautiful!!

  • Nice work. Interesting to hear a song being worked out on its way to perfection (CH#2).
