Mandaluyong cops brace for healing priest's arrival

TO avoid a repeat of the incident in Olongapo City on Sunday where two persons died, the Eastern Police District has deployed 250 policemen as crowd control when thousands are expected to flock the healing mass of Fr. Fernando Suarez in Mandaluyong City.

"We want to make sure that the Olongapo incident will not happen in Mandaluyong," said EPD director, Chief Supt. Leon Nilo dela Cruz in an interview.

Dela Cruz ordered Mandaluyong police chief, Senior Supt. Ericson Velasquez to look after the devotees, particularly the elderly who are expected to troop the Divine Mercy Church in Maysilo Circle in Mandaluyong City from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Velasquez said that apart from 250 uniformed cops, more than 100 barangay watchmen and another 100 city hall staff, including medical personnel, will also be deployed in the area.

The Mandaluyong police chief said they will supervise the expected long lines of people who wish to get near to the healing priest.

"Kami ang bahala sa pila sa labas. Pagpasok sa loob ng simbahan, bahala na 'yung mga taga-simbahan na sumalo sa mga tao," Velasquez said, adding that they are coordinating with church officials to ensure the safety of devotees.

Velasquez also appealed to the crowd to avoid pushing others to prevent injuries.

Anticipating a huge crowd for the healing mass, the Mandaluyong City government advised the public on the rerouting scheme starting at 5 a.m. today.

Both sides of Open Canal (San Francisco St.) will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Half portion of San Francisco St. -- from Makati to Mandaluyong side -- will be closed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
